Botswana is proud to maintain a balanced stamp policy. We plan our issues long in advance with designs reflecting matters of national importance, and release new Definitive Issues not more than once in five years. Nor do we publish numerous commemorative stamps, attempting to keep these to a maximum of five issues
in any year. Such a policy has successfully maintained the integrity of our stamps and ensured their value to philatelists the world over.
Mammals of Botswana is the eighth Definitive Issue to be published since Botswana gained her independence in 1966. Previous Definitive Issues have all pictured either mammals or birds with the exception of the 1974 issue that illustrated minerals. We are very proud of our abundant wildlife and recognise the need to conserve it.
To this end, Botswana has some of the most proactive wildlife protection laws in the world. We also have a National Conservation Strategy that ensures sustainable developments and protects biological diversity.
