Botswana maintains a
conservative issuing policy. Definitive sets are only issued
every 5 Years.
This set is the 9th
issued since Botswana gained its independence in 1966.
Previously Botswana was known as Bechuanaland Protectorate and
at an earlier time as British Bechuanaland.
The smallest
butterfly occurring in Southern Africa, the Dwarf Blue was
photographed not far from Gaborone, the capital city.
It was once thought
to be the smallest in the world but a slightly smaller butterfly
has been found in Afghanistan.
The Butterflies
illustrated on the stamps were found in their natural habitat in
Botswana and the Stamp Designer photographed them going about
their normal daily activities.
There are 14 stamps
designed and 2 First Day Covers, which features typical rural
scenes in Botswana where butterflies would be
encountered. |
