Under the order known as
Coleoptera, which means "Sheathed Wing", beetles
include more than 300000 species worldwide, around 18000 of
which are represented in Southern Africa. They are the
largest and most diverse order in the entire animal kingdom,
believed to make up at least a quarter of the animal kingdom
and representing one fifth of all known living organisms.
Beetles differ tremendously
in range of size, colour, and form. Some are as large as
16cm while others are as small as 1mm. What single out the
Coleoptera is that their front pair of wings are not
functional but have become hard, horny shields protecting
the delicate, transparent rear wings underneath- and also
protecting the abdomen.
