Philately

Philately is the collection and study of postage stamps. Collecting stamps is a very enjoyable hobby for people of all ages all over the world. It is one of the most interesting ways to learn about other countries, their people, their wildlife, history and culture.

Welcome to the world of stamps.
There are three types of stamp collecting namely:

  • General collection: Collecting stamps of all countries
  • Country collection: Collecting stamps of one or few countries, sometimes specializing in stamps of a particular time period.
  • Thematic collection: Collecting stamps of one, or more countries that have certain design subjects or themes.

People collect stamps for the following reasons:

  •  As a hobby.
  • To appreciate and learn about the history and culture of other countries.
  • For serous philatelists, as an investment.

There are two types of stamps namely:

Definitive Stamps

These are stamps that are in general use over a period of 5 years in Botswana. A definitive series usually comprises about 15 stamps from from the lowest denomination to the highest value that is usually used for parcels.

Commemorative Stamps

A commemorative set is sold for a limited period, usually one year. The number of stamps is usually 4 in Botswana. The stamp issue set  may honour a person, place or event, it may promote understanding of Botswana's cultural and historical heritage both human and environmental, or it may promote social programmes such as HIV/AIDS interventions, literacy etc.

Please select a stamp issue you would like to view. You can also order these stamps from

their specific pages. If you would like  to join our Philatelic Mailing List, click here.
